So let's start with the pattern shall we?

It's a basic pattern from one of my favorite designers for boutique clothes (okay, she is my favorite!). Jenn from Tie Dye Diva makes the absolute best patterns out there. I've raved about them before. They are just some of the best patterns put out there!

This was the pattern I used, The Peasant Twirl Dress, which is no longer available. However, she still has this pattern available and it would be simply to modify! It is a one piece but if you cut it at the bodice and add a gathered skirt it would be the same style as the one I've done.

So, I know you want to know how I went from that, to this:

Let's start from the beginning. Like I do with any project the first step is to grab a hot cup of coffee! That is an essential part to tackling any project! I adore coffee, and I think a vanilla caramel mocha latte would hit the spot for sure!

Best part of digital patterns? Instant gratification. No trip to the store needed! I used all the bodice and sleeve pieces for this. The only measurement I changed involved the skirt (which doesn't use pattern pieces). I'll explain more about that later. Let's start with the bodice and sleeves first!

Sewing the Bodice of a Snow White Dress Up Costume:

You are going to want to decorate the bodice before sewing it. I purchased the trim at Hobby Lobby and just eyeballed it. I pinned it fairly well. Then you simply take it to the machine to stitch the trim down.

I used invisible thread on my machine and also in the bobbin.

I used a straight stitch down the middle of the skinny trim, and a zig zag down the fancier trim. I would highly recommend using stabilizer underneath to keep things from puckering. Stabilizer is such a magical thing, but it is never used as much as it should be. Don't shy away from it!

Adding trim to snow white costume sleeves : Up close view of red stripe detail on Snow White peasant dress sleeve before sewing

For the sleeves, I did a bit of math. This will vary for different sizes, but the technique is the same. I decided each sleeve should have 3 strips of red trim (I used bias tape). So first I found the middle for the center stripe. I then placed 2 equal distance apart on each side. You can see they are marked with pins.

I knew that I wanted the trim to actually fall a bit angled on the sleeve, so while the top was pinned, I shifted the bottom over (you can see the original pin). I used a ruler to make sure they were the same. I also put fusible webbing on the back of the bias tape and ironed it down before I sewed it on. That keeps it from shifting, or from having to pin to much!

Using an edging foot for precision sewing

Here you can see I have my edging foot on. I love that foot for it's precision. I lined it up with the bias tape and sewed along each side of the bias tape. This adds such a nice touch and the edging foot keeps your lines so much straighter!

You can see how by spreading the bottom sleeve out that it made the sewn sleeve look straighter. Hard to explain-something about the curves. Sew the elastic in the sleeves as directed, as well as the bodice and back. Here is a close up on the bodice:

I wanted to show you this picture so you can see exactly how I did my elastic for the neck. I wanted the bodice to lay flat in the middle, so I left elastic out in that area. See how it is flat right in the middle by the gold trim? Here is how I did that.

sew a channel for elastic in a peasant dress

You can do the elastic with a channel, or your preferred method. I chose to serge my edge and then fold it over and sew a channel. I had the flat portion folded over, but did not sew it yet. You can see above where I threaded the elastic through, and had each end stopped at the point where I wanted the costume to be flat. In order to make up for the flat part, I cut the elastic one inch smaller. I allowed for a bit of over hang and then sewed the elastic down as close to the trim as possible, to hide the stitches.

Now sew down the flat part just as you did the channel. That means the bodice is all done! Now it's time to move onto the skirt.

Sewing the Skirt of a Snow White Costume:

I added all 3 layers together, and subtracted the seam amounts. This will vary by sizes. Once that was done, I had the amount I needed for the length of my yellow fabric. For the width I used the second tiers width. I went ahead and sewed a small red tier to go in-between the yellow fabric and the bodice. I used the width measurements of the original first tier from the pattern and made it 2.5 inches long. I used the seam allowance from the pattern. You could just use the yellow fabric and make a red sash which would be very darling! That is my suggestion if you are using Jen's newest pattern.

You can see the red tier above! Finish sewing those together and finish your hem, and then you've completed your handmade Snow White Costume! Yay you!

What do you think? Do you like using a peasant dress to make a dress up costume for your little Snow White? One of the things I like about a peasant dress is how it can last many years based on sizing.
